Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha’s Aim

The driving force behind Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha is the “power of imagination” to generate ideas and the “power of action” to apply them to actual tea production.
Rather than staying put for fear of failure, the entire staff first thinks about what can be done now. We are not bound by old ideas, but always seek, research, and plan new methods and incorporate them into our tea production.
Spreading the wonderful Japanese tea culture to the world at large. Our dream is to see Japanese tea everywhere in the world. Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha will continue to aim high in the world.

Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha’s tea production is a testament to
growing together with the community.

Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha’s total management area is approximately 300 hectares*, one of the largest in Japan. The gently rolling terrain of the Osumi region, with its relatively flat landscape, is ideal for the mechanization and intensification of agricultural work. During the tea picking season, a harvesting tractor runs around the tea fields to pick tea efficiently. Another advantage is the abundant agricultural water. We have one of the highest rates of sprinkler operation in Japan to prevent frost, a significant challenge for tea cultivation.
*Owned tea plantations: 120 ha, affiliated tea plantations: 180 ha

Variety of Kagoshima tea cultivars

Yutaka Midori” is brightly colored and has a strong umami taste. The beautifully light-colored “Sae Midori”. The warm climate of Kagoshima nurtures a wide variety of tea cultivars with rich individuality, such as “Okumidori,” which has a refreshing aroma. In addition, various new cultivars, such as “Benifuuki,” It has been shown to improve certain allergies such as hay fever, are actively introduced. The abundance of cultivars allows for a wider range of picking periods and enables us to meet a variety of consumer needs.

Tea Plantation Squadron, Tea Rangers

Good tea comes from a healthy environment. The “Tea Plantation Squadron: Tea Rangers” was born from the idea that “good tea comes from a healthy environment. Five original machines are currently in operation, including the “Hurricane King,” which uses water and wind to blow away pests, and the “Bran Jet,” which uses water and rice bran to suppress the growth of pests. We are promoting “IPM farming” to produce safe tea without relying on pesticides and herbicides.

Smart IPM farming practices

Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha has begun to automate tea harvesters and weeding machines. The company is also promoting “smart agriculture” by networking and DXing information to determine when to harvest and how to deal with insects and frost damage. This will help to save labor in agricultural work and solve the problems of aging farmers and labor shortages. The fusion of “smart agriculture” and the “IPM farming method,” which is a comprehensive weed management method centered on the Tea Rangers. This is the next generation of “Smart IPM Farming” that Kagoshima Horiguchi Tea Company is committed to.

Local community working together to produce tea

The affiliated tea farmers who grow tea with us and supply us with tea leaves are an indispensable part of Horiguchi Seicha. We have built a strong partnership over a long period of time by sharing information on tea production and certification. We will continue to promote the overall Japanese tea industry from Kagoshima Shibushi by stabilizing the management of local tea farmers and promoting employment.

Tea Factory, the pride of Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha.

Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha has one of the largest tea factories in Japan. We process tea responsibly from the ground up in our own plants, including the sencha plant “T-Dome,” the tencha plant “TeaPOLE,” and the finishing plant. We are not only concerned with the scale and production capacity, but also with the local environment by adopting a low-noise structure and setting up an open space for various events, aiming to create a tea factory that blends in with the local community.Kagoshima Horiguchi Seicha has one of the largest tea factories in Japan. The site of tea production where artisans show off their skills

The processing of sencha tea involves a wide range of processes, including steaming, rubbing, heating, and sorting. Even in today’s highly automated tea factories, the taste of the tea is determined by the keen senses of the artisan. Tea masters in each process strictly check the feel, taste, and aroma of the tea, and practice uncompromising tea production. In addition, we pursue not only good taste but also safe tea production through thorough quality and hygiene control and traceability (production history) disclosure.

Evolving tea production to meet the needs of the times

Horiguchi Tea Plant, which has the largest tea plantation in Japan and receives 100 tons of tea leaves per day during peak season, has a unique tea-making facility that is rare among other tea plants. The plant has eight huge fresh-leaf refrigerators, each of which can store up to 8,000 kg of tea leaves, keeping them cool and fresh for a long time. We are also constantly striving to optimize our production environment by obtaining FSSC 22000 (Food Safety Standard for Food Management System) certification for rough tea, ground tea, and finishing.
